As much as off-road riding is an individual sport, it takes a whole community to keep the good times rolling. And as with any other sport, there are rules that come with the excitement of off-road riding. Both written and unwritten. If you join us for a dirt bike adventure in Bali, you become part of the riding community. And it’s important to understand and practice the right trail etiquette for a safe and fun experience and a respectful vibe for all trail users. We’ve listed 8 important rules you should follow while riding in popular areas such as the beaches or jungle in Tabanan, the Forest, or the Volcano area in Kintamani, or in other popular destinations around the world.
Your safety and fun start before you even jump on a dirt bike. It starts with how you prepare for your ride, wearing the right gear and choosing the right bike. Make sure you wear a helmet, protective clothing, boots, pads and gloves that are specifically designed for the off-road. If you join us on one of our trails through Bali’s beautiful areas, you don’t need to worry about bringing your own gear since we have everything for you.
Wearing the right outfit on your adventure is not only important to stay safe if you fall or if a branch hits you, but it’s also to feel comfy and dry during the rainy season in Bali.
Before heading out, make sure you take the time to familiarize yourself with the trails you will be crossing on. Every trail in Bali is for a different and for another level, with its own obstacles and challenges. It doesn’t matter if you are a beginner who wants to ride the sandy shores in Tabanan or if you are an advanced rider riding the rocky roads of the Volcano Kintamani, knowing the conditions on the trail sets the vibe for your ride. Also make sure you match your ride with your skill level. So you know what kind of trail it is and what you can expect.

Make sure you keep a safe distance with riders in front of you and around to avoid unnecessary collisions. You will have less responding time if the rider in front of you slows down, makes a mistake or makes an unexpected move. If you are a faster rider than people in your group, you can choose to pass. How? First, make sure you only pass in a safe spot, where the slower rider can easily move without falling. Then, make sure the dirt biker ahead of you knows that you are there by revving a few times or just saying, “Hi there, on your left/right.” Slow down, pass cleanly, and always show respect by thanking them as you go by.
And what about yielding? A very important part, since it probably happens that you encounter non-motorized users too. Such as hikers, horses or local Balinese people. You need to yield to everyone you encounter without a motor. For other riders on a dirt bike, the uphill riders have right-of-way over downhill riders.
Yes, we all want to take pictures and videos of Bali’s nature, your friends crossing by or pretty selfies, and that’s great! But always make sure you do this in a safe and open space and spread out so others can pass easily. So keep the trail clear. Don’t just stop in the middle of the trail, jump off your bike and start taking pics. You can probably imagine that this is dangerous for you and the other enduro riders on the trail. If you want to rest or have a little break for some snacks or taking photos, move off the track or find an open space where it’s easy for other riders to pass without any danger!
Dirt biking is happening right in the middle of Bali’s beautiful nature. From bright green jungles, long open beaches to mountains with black sand dunes. Everyone starts at the beginning and you don’t become a pro enduro rider overnight. Your progression will take time and patience. Knowing what your dirt bike level is important for staying safe and a fun experience. If you are a beginner rider it’s more than fine to take it easy and focus on learning all the basics. Respecting the trails also means that you understand that some routes might be more challenging than others and that you should match the trails with your skill level. Don’t hesitate to ask our professional guides for help and feedback, they will help you to move through all the early steps of your dirt bike journey.
Our beach Tabanan trail is great for beginners, the Jungle Tabanan and Forest Kintamani are suitable for intermediate and advanced riders, while the Volcano Kintamani is perfect for those who really want to challenge themselves. And remember, off-road riding is about enjoying the journey, not just the destination and knowing your limits is a big part of that adventure.
The fellowship in the dirt bike community is what makes this sport so rewarding. So if you come across someone who has fallen, has issues or needs support, do so! A simple gesture can mean a lot, especially when they are struggling or in a tough spot on the trail. We all face challenges along the way, and offering a hand can really make someone’s day. So everyone can enjoy their enduro experience!
If you crash or fall and you are not seriously injured, please try to move your bike to the side of the track. If you are hurt, also make sure you try to leave the track as soon as possible. Lying on the road can create dangerous situations for you and others. When you ride with us, our guides are always ready to help you with every step of the way, also with the mechanical issues, so you won’t have to worry.
