The story of KTM, short for “Kraftfahrzeug Trunkenpolz Mattighofen” starts in 1934, long before the high-performance racing bikes and cars we know today. Austrian engineer Hans Trunkenpolz opened a car and bicycle repair shop in Mattighofen which was the foundation for what we now know as KTM.
A few years later, his shop began selling motorcycles, and by the following year, it expanded to selling cars as well. This is when they began to use the name Kraftfahrzeug Trunkenpolz Mattighofen, with “Kraftfahrzeug” meaning motor vehicle in German, connecting to its founder and the roots in Mattighofen.
Then in 1992, KTM split into four separate companies (motorcycle, bicycle, radiator, and toolmaking) allowing them to focus on the rapidly growing different segments and in particular the fast growing motorcycle side of the business. By the late 1960s, they mostly focused on off-road bikes, reacting to the growing excitement around dirt biking. Their innovative designs, with a focus on performance and engineering, quickly caught the attention of riders looking for high-quality dirt bikes.
They made their official racing debut and won their first title in the Austrian 125cc national championship in 1954. That same year, Hans Trunkenpolz, the creator of KTM, started working on his own motorcycle and introduced the KTM R 100, which was powered by a 98cc two-stroke Rotax engine.
By 1974, KTM was beginning to establish a strong reputation in the dirt bike industry. They unveiled the KTM 250, their first motocross motorcycle. It gained popularity among riders almost once thanks to its lightweight construction and excellent handling. The KTM 250 contributed to the brand’s reputation by drawing in competitive riders who prioritised power, speed, and safety.
KTM continued to innovate and release new models designed for various terrains, ranging from enduro machines to trail bikes, in the 1980s, making sure that there was something for everyone. Additionally, they dominated the racing circuit by participating in a variety of events and collaborating with professional riders, which significantly helped in their recognition and reputation-building among the motorcycling world.
