You’ve probably seen the photos and videos. Wheelies on the black sand beach, jumps on the jungle trails, mud everywhere, and riders smiling like it’s the best day of their lives. And somewhere in the back of your head a voice says: “That looks incredible, but is that actually for me?”
If you’ve never ridden a dirt bike or motorbike in your life, that question feels even bigger. What if you’re too slow? What if you can’t keep up? What if you fall and hold everyone back? What if it’s just not for you?
Those doubts are completely normal, and almost every beginner who books with us has them. The good news? Most of them are gone within the first ten minutes on the bike. Here’s why.
Let’s start with the practical stuff. Dirt biking at Bali Dirt Bikes is off-road, which means you don’t need a driver’s licence or any previous riding experience to join a tour. Zero. None.
We’re not putting you on a road with traffic and hoping for the best. You’re on the off-road trails, the black sand coastline, jungle paths and volcanic terrain. And our guides will be riding alongside you the entire time. The whole experience is designed around you learning as you go, with professional support at every step.
That said, we do take your level seriously. We’ll match you with the right bike for your size and your experience. We won’t throw you onto a technical jungle trail on day one if you’ve never touched a throttle. Our Learn to Ride package exists exactly for this, it’s a great introduction to the bike before you head out onto the trails.
But even knowing all that, a few fears tend to stick around. Let’s go through the most common ones.
Let’s address the big one first, because it’s the fear most people are actually carrying, even if they phrase it differently.
Yes, you might fall. And that’s okay to say out loud. Falling is part of off-road riding, even experienced riders go down. What matters is where and how. On the Beach Tabanan trail, the soft black sand is about the most forgiving surface you’ll find on two wheels. It cushions falls far better than the rocky terrain or hard-packed jungle earth. Our guides will walk you through what to do when you feel a fall coming; how to relax your body, how to roll, and how to get back up without panic.
The deeper fear for most beginners isn’t the fall itself, it’s the embarrassment of falling in front of others. But here’s the thing: nobody laughs. Everyone in your group is either a beginner themselves or has been there before. Falls are part of the story, not the end of it.
And the gear helps too. Every rider is geared up before hitting the trail: helmet, boots, knee guards, gloves, chest protector, jersey and pants. You won’t be going out there unprotected!
Read this blog for a realistic look at what injuries can happen and how to avoid them. Not to scare you off, but to help you ride smart and safe from the start.
You don’t need to be an athlete to enjoy dirt biking in Bali. You don’t need to train for it like it’s a marathon. What you do need is a reasonable level of general fitness, enough to stay alert, hold your balance, and handle a few hours on a bike without completely running out of steam.
Our Beach Tabanan trail is the most physically manageable option in our lineup, and it’s where we always start with first-time riders. Wide open, forgiving black sand, no tight technical sections. It’s a great trail to ease you in, not push you to your limit on day one.
This comes up a lot, especially from solo travellers. The short answer: we’ll match you with the right group and if you want to ride just 1:1 with a guide, it’s also possible.
Every tour is guided front and back, and the pace is always adjusted to the group. Nobody gets left behind, and nobody is made to feel like they’re slowing things down. If you need more time on a section, you get more time.
It also helps to know that confidence on a dirt bike builds faster than most people expect. Riders who start the day barely comfortable at walking pace are often surprised by how quickly they find their rhythm and speed. A few hours in, things that felt impossible in the morning start to click.
Yes, when done right, dirt biking in Bali is safe. And we take that responsibility seriously. Our guides are experienced professionals who know these trails inside out and ride with you throughout the entire session. Before the ride you’ll get everything you need: how to handle the bike, safety tips, trail etiquette, and plenty of inside knowledge from our guides who ride these trails every single day.
One thing to sort before you arrive: make sure your travel insurance covers extreme sports. Gear and bike damage is covered in your package, but personal health insurance is not.
Never try, never know, right? If you’re the kind of person who’d rather try something and find out than stay on the sideline wondering, yes. It’s for you!
You don’t need any prior experience. You don’t need to be incredibly fit. You don’t need to know anything about bikes or trails. What you need is a willingness to show up, listen to your guide, and give yourself permission to be a beginner. Bali’s trails take care of the rest.
Most of our first-time riders leave wondering why they waited so long. Some of them book the jungle trail for the next day or end up coming back to Bali just to ride with us again.
Start with the Beach Tabanan trail, take it at your own pace, and see where it takes you. Our guides will be with you every kilometre of the way!
