Taking Care of Your Dirt Bike

Keep Your Ride Running Strong

Dirt bikes are made for adventure and to be dirty, but that doesn’t mean they don’t need care. They are made to last a lifetime and it’s all about the thrill and fun of riding. But to keep this feeling alive, it’s essential to give your dirt bike the love, care and maintenance it deserves and needs! This is not just about making sure your bike runs smoothly, it’s also about making sure you’ll have a safe ride, changing gears, dusting it off and more.

By investing a little time and effort into this, you will prevent breakdowns, accidents and your bike will perform better, making sure you have a safe and enjoyable riding experience. Plus, a well-maintained bike will keep its value better so you can enjoy it longer, or if you decide to sell it later.

So, let’s roll up our sleeves and take a look at how you can take good care of your dirt bike!

What to Maintain?

So we now know that regular maintenance is important to keep enjoying the fun a dirt bike offers. But what components should we check and clean after a ride?

Wash your Bike

After that exciting and muddy ride through the Kintamani Forest it’s important to wash your bike. Remove large chunks of mud or dirt by hand before washing and then start washing off your bike. After each ride, use a pressure washer (not too much pressure) or hose to remove dirt, mud, and debris from your bike. Pay attention to areas that tend to accumulate dirt, such as the engine, wheels, and frame. Avoid using caustic or abrasive detergents that can harm the plastic. Finish off the washing cycle with a towel to dry off your bike.

Replace Filters

Regular filter replacements are essential for maintaining the health and performance of your dirt bike’s engine. Unlike normal motorcycles, dirt bikes are exposed to more dirt, sand and water from the Tabanan Beach, which can infect the oil and reduce its functions. As a result, dirt bike engines typically require more frequent replacements, so make sure that all equipment is clean and free of contaminants. Depending on the type of dirt bike you can check how regularly you should change it.

Air filter: Air filters allow proper air circulation, which is needed for the engine to function. If your air filter is filled with mud, dirt, and dust, it will restrict the airflow, and your engine will work much harder to draw air and process the fuel for your ride, which is a huge waste of energy! For casual riders, cleaning every few rides is enough. However, more frequent cleaning may be needed for riders who frequently ride in dusty, muddy and rainy conditions.

Oil Filter: The oil filter removes contaminants from your engine oil, preventing them from circulating and causing damage. Regular oil changes are important for dirt bikes, as they are exposed to more dirt than normal bikes. Change your oil every 5-15 hours depending on your driving levels. Don’t forget about your forks: if they’re oil-driven, keep the oil clean and change it as needed. This will help your bike run smoothly and prevent engine damage.

Fuel filter: The fuel filter keeps dirt and other stuff out of your engine’s fuel. If it gets clogged, your engine won’t run as well. How often you should change it depends on the type of fuel you use and the quality of the fuel. Check your owner’s manual for the right schedule and recommendations.

Chassis maintenance: for a smooth ride

The chassis is the backbone of your dirt bike, so it’s important to keep it in good shape. This includes checking the wheels, steering, suspension, brakes, and the chain.

Wheels: make sure the wheels spin smoothly and there’s no play in the bearings. If they feel rough or wobbly, replace the bearings.

Steering: check if the handlebars move smoothly and there’s no play in the steering head. If you notice any issues, tighten or replace the steering head bearings.

Suspension: inspect the fork seals for leaks and the shock absorbers for any damage. If needed, have them repaired or replaced. A good suspension system will give you a comfortable and controlled ride.

Brakes: The brakes are crucial for dirt bikes, the front brake accounts for 70% of the whole braking system. Regularly inspect the brake pads and rotors for wear and tear. Worn-out brake pads can reduce braking performance and increase stopping distances, on the other hand, damaged rotors can affect braking efficiency. You don’t want to have an accident due to this, so make sure the brakes are clean and free of rust and dirt, and replace moving parts if needed.

Chain and sprockets: the last part of the chassis to check is the chain, something you might not be thinking off. But checking this is very important to make sure you have a safe ride! Check the chain tension and replace it completely if it’s stretched too much. Inspect the sprockets for wear too and replace both if necessary.

Electrical system

Now that you’ve checked, cleaned, and repaired most parts of your dirt bike, it’s time to focus on the electrical system. A well-maintained electrical system ensures your bike’s lights, instruments, and other electronic components function well.

Battery: Regularly check the battery voltage and condition. Make sure it’s set up well and free of corrosion. If necessary, clean the battery terminals and tighten all the connections.

Headlights and taillights: check if both your headlights and taillights are working. If not, replace the bulbs. Look for any loose or damaged wires and fix them. This will keep you safe on the road and prevent electrical problems.

Wiring and connectors: talking about wires, make sure you check and inspect all the wires and connectors regularly for any signs of wear, damage, or corrosion. Tighten, repair or replace wiring if needed, and make sure everything runs smoothly!

Maintenance Schedule

Here’s a simple overview with a basic maintenance schedule to get you started!

  • Check tire pressure, brakes, for loose parts and damages.
  • Inspect and clean the filters and refuel if necessary.

After every ride:

  • Clean your bike thoroughly with pressure water.
  • Check the chain.
  • Check for any damage or wear.

Monthly Maintenance:

  • Check engine oil levels and brake pads.
  • Clean and lubricate suspension components.

Quarterly Maintenance:

  • Change engine oil and filter.
  • Inspect air filter and replace if necessary.
